Sgraffito Workshop

  • Earthworks Ceramic Studios (map)

Join artist and current Earthworks artist-in-residence Bec Wonders for a workshop exploring sgraffito carving where images are created by carving through layers of color to reveal the clay beneath. Drawing on her research-led practice, Bec will introduce how she transforms historical references and folklore into designs for clay, offering insight into her creative process alongside practical demonstrations.

Over the course of this three-hour workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of sgraffito carving by applying coloured underglaze to leather-hard clay and carving through the surface. A selection of transfer illustrations inspired by autumnal folklore will be provided, alongside individual guidance on adapting imagery to ceramic forms. You are also welcome to bring your own sketches, although no preparation is required.

The session begins with experimentation on practice tiles using a range of carving tools before moving on to a finished tile. Those with their own trimmed stoneware greenware are welcome to decorate it instead of using a tile. No previous experience of ceramics, illustration or sgraffito is necessary.

Book via Earthworks Ceramic Studios.
