These vases celebrate the overlooked creatures that inhabit the edges of urban life. Rats, insects and scavenging birds appear within circular frames across the rounded surfaces, depicted with the clarity of folk illustration and the directness of traditional decorative pottery. The title plays with the long history of labelling certain animals as vermin, a word historically used to describe creatures considered pests within cities, farms and domestic spaces. Yet these animals are also remarkably adaptable survivors, thriving alongside human settlements for centuries. By presenting them within ornamental borders usually reserved for heroic or symbolic figures, the vases elevate these street dwellers into subjects of attention and curiosity. The designs transform familiar urban pests into emblems of resilience, quietly acknowledging the hidden ecosystems that persist within everyday city environments.
