Devil’s Candles

Stoneware, Red and Black Underglaze, Sgraffito Carving
This collection of candlestick holders and goblets draws on the visual language of ritual, religion and folklore. Deep red and black glazes evoke fire, blood and ash, while studded surfaces and dripping forms suggest melted wax and ceremonial objects handled over time. Their stacked, altar-like silhouettes recall traditional church candlesticks, yet small inscriptions and darker motifs hint at the presence of the devil within moral tales and superstitions. In European folklore, candles often marked moments of prayer, protection or summoning, their light symbolising both divine guidance and uneasy encounters with the supernatural. Arranged together, the pieces resemble a small ritual setting, where flame, vessel and shadow transform everyday ceramics into objects that feel part devotional tool, part theatrical relic.
